Abstract
This study explores the use of humor in Swedish sports coaching, a topic often overlooked in research. Using a mixed-method approach, 13 coaches from eight sports were observed and interviewed to understand how humor is applied in coaching contexts. The findings show that humor is used in various situations before, during, and after practice, as well as in high-pressure moments to enhance focus, reduce stress, and build stronger relationships. Effective use of humor depends on factors such as coach-athlete relationships, team culture, and the coach’s personality and leadership style. While many coaches reported humor as a natural trait, it was also recognized as a learnable skill. Humor contributed to a positive training environment, improved communication, and increased motivation. The study concludes that humor, when applied with awareness and sensitivity, can be a valuable tool for fostering engagement, trust, and development in sport coaching.
