Abstract
This study examines how biochar can be used as a component in potting substrates, with a particular focus on craft-based horticultural practices and practical experiences. The investigation consists of a cultivation experiment in which marigold (Tagetes erecta) and kale (Brassica oleracea) were grown in substrates containing 0 %, 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % pre-charged biochar, as well as qualitative interviews with four professional growers experienced in using biochar in container production. The results from the cultivation experiment indicate that vegetative growth was greatest in the substrate without biochar, whereas substrates containing 20–30 % biochar demonstrated advantages such as improved moisture retention, reduced weed occurrence, and lower weight. The interviews confirm that biochar is perceived as a stable and long-lasting material that can facilitate cultivation work and promote good root development, although cost and dust formation present significant challenges. Overall, the study shows that biochar offers several practical benefits, but its effectiveness depends on plant species, charging method, and cultivation duration.
