Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to gain insights into the emotions that teachers expect when they want to incorporate ESD into teaching and which of these emotions have an influence on the intention to implement ESD in the classroom in order to derive support options for ESD in formal school teaching. The study also examined the local educational philosophies towards ESD of the southern German states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Theory: Based on the model of goal-oriented behaviour (MGB), the discrete emotions and their role within the MGB were determined using the Discrete Emotions Questionnaire (DEQ).
Method: In a quantitative cross-sectional study, 60 secondary school teachers of social and natural science subjects from the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate completed an online questionnaire. The data was analysed both statistically and in parts using a qualitative content analysis.
Results: Enjoyment was the strongest and fear the least anticipated emotion among social and science teachers in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate in relation to teach- ing ESD. In addition, attitudes and PBC were found to be significant determinants for the implementation of ESD in the classroom, while emotions did not play a statistically significant role. The discussion of the results showed that teaching ESD is a complex action as it is influenced by many determinants and the role of emotions and their influence on teaching intention depends on other factors, such as individual motivation, values and habits, which should be considered in more detail in future research. In addition, no major differences in local educational philosophies regarding ESD were found between the two southern German states (Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate), as teachers in both states generally ascribe these a positive educational philosophy towards ESD.
