This study wishes to examine how Folkets Hus in Gothenburg has transformed as an institution in relation to broader societal processes of change. By drawing on theories of the social production of space and neoliberal rationality, the study aims to gain a greater understanding as to how Folkets Hus has undergone, and continues to undergo a transformation that is both material and symbolic in character. Furthermore, the study strives to contribute to a deeper understanding as to how the transformations of Folkets Hus can be understood as part of a wider reconfiguration of urban space and democratic institutions. A transformation reflected not only in the reorganization of spatial resources and institutional structures, but also in shifting meaning, practices and forms of belonging attached to the space.
