Abstract

Description

Zooplankton occur in most types of aquatic environments and are an important link in food webs by consuming phytoplankton and serving as prey for planktivorous fish. This study investigated the response of the zooplankton community following the control of the invasive goldfish (Carassius auratus) using the piscicide rotenone. The aim was to compare the density and occurrence of genera of cladocerans and copepods before and after rotenone treatment to evaluate the short-term effects in Rastadammarna. The study was conducted in June 2026 and compared data with a survey carried out by the consulting company Sweco prior to the rotenone treatment. A water sample was collected using a Limnos sampler and analysed under a stereomicroscope to determine density and identify taxa. The results showed that cladocerans remained dominant, although their density decreased from 392.04 ind./L before rotenone to 286.67 ind./L. In contrast, copepod density increased from 5.72 ind./L to 55 ind./L. A notable difference was the occurrence of the genus Daphnia, which was completely absent from Sweco’s survey. In both this study and Sweco’s survey, only copepods belonging to the order Cyclopoida were observed. The results showed that zooplankton occurred at relatively high individual densities following the rotenone treatment. However, since the pre-treatment sampling was conducted during a different season, the effects of rotenone cannot be distinguished from natural seasonal variation. This should therefore be considered when interpreting the results. The study contributes to the understanding of short-term changes in the abundance of cladocerans and copepods after rotenone treatment in Rastadammarna, which may be valuable for future projects in which rotenone is used.
