Abstract
Hybrid working solutions have become increasingly common following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. This new way of working introduces organisational challenges regarding how the culture within an organisation is created and maintained in an environment that combines both a physical and digital presence. This study aims to explore how hybrid work affects an organisation’s ability to develop and maintain its culture, as well as the digital tools and strategies used in the process. This will be studied through an employer’s perspective. A qualitative method was used in this study, based on 13 semi-structured interviews with managers from different industries, along with two complementary organisational policies. The analysis is based on Schein’s three-level model of organizational culture and follows a thematic analysis. The findings from the study reveal that hybrid work creates both opportunities regarding increased employee flexibility, while also presenting challenges in cultural development. The results also show that digital tools play a crucial role in the transition to hybrid working environments. However, hybrid working environments may also create potential issues in sustaining a sense of community and spontaneity within an organisation. This study provides insight into how employers experience hybrid environments and how technology affects organisational norms and control.
