Abstract

Description

This study examines how consumers perceive and relate to negative information regarding companies' workplace culture and relation to brands. As social media has made companies' internal conditions increasingly visible, issues concerning working conditions, ethics, and corporate responsibility have become a more important part of how companies are perceived by consumers. The purpose of the study is therefore to develop a deeper understanding of how consumers interpret negative information about workplace culture and how their relationships with brands are aff ected. The study is based on a qualitative approach in which ten semi-structured interviews were conducted. The analysis is grounded in theories of symbolic consumption, moral ambivalence, and brand relationships in order to understand how consumption, identity, and emotional relationships with brands are infl uenced by exposure to negative information. The results show that negative information about workplace culture not only aff ects consumers' perceptions of companies, but also how they understand their relationship to consumption, morality and identity. Several respondents express strong emotional and moral reactions, although these do not always lead to changes in consumption behavior. Instead, consumer´s reasoning is often characterized by ambivalence, where personal values are weighed against factors such as price and convenience. The study also shows that the relationship between consumers and brands is emotional and dynamic, where negative information often leads to the relationship being renegotiated rather than completely terminated.
