Abstract

This study examines how “to do”-lists, as a self disciplinary practice, influence and shape female identity. Our findings are based on six individual interviews with women aged 20 to 30. Drawing upon Foucault’s theory of discipline and punishment and Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory, we create a larger understanding on how young women use the “to do”-list to discipline themselves and adapt to current feminine and female coded ideals about productivity and discipline. Furthermore, this study explores how seemingly trivial practices create and shape self image and identity. The result of our study showed that the “to do”-list greatly impacted how the participants viewed themselves and their habits. It also showed how the participants used the “to do”-list for many different reasons. Most participants used it to feel productive and internally reward themselves for felt productivity, while at the same time, also being able to punish themselves for not meeting a standard they set for themselves. The standard itself was created both by social media and ideas of what it is to be a woman.
