Abstract

The Central Post office in Gothenburg was built between 1918-25. Its purpose was to deliver letters more efficient. Today there are plans to use this empty monumental building for a hotel establishment. The building and its history contain many stories. This is shown in the buildings visaul appearence and architecture, but also in its function and importance to our society. Before you place a new hotel in this old building you have to discuss issues about modern design being placed in an old context – objects and ideas of yesterday meet objects and ideas of today. Our way of communicating today is different from a century ago. A classical pulpet, where you write letters, is able to bring discussions about behaviour of today. As a symbol it can represent certain values important for our modern society not to neglect. From a deconstruction of the pulpet and the Central Post office I create new objects which encourages moments of writing: a pulpet, a pen case and a light. I place these objects into a space and analyse its consistency in relation to the new hotel.
