Abstract

Description

Childhood stuttering is affected by the nature of the social interactions in the child’s different communicative contexts. Early intervention for preschool children who stutter should thus include support measures in the children’s preschool environment, where collaboration with preschool teachers is of importance. The present study aimed to examine speech and language pathologists’ (SLP) and preschool teachers’ experiences of collaboration around preschool children who stutter, and how the ideal collaboration might be described. The data consisted of semi structured interviews with eight SLP’s and four preschool teachers. Some interviews were held in person, others digitally. A reflexive thematic analysis resulted in four main themes and 13 sub themes. The result showed that collaboration was currently limited, however appreciated. Several structural and relational factors were believed to affect and significantly limit expanded collaboration. The participants requested better means of communication, more time and an increased level of knowledge among preschool teachers. Closer collaboration was considered to require changes on an organisational level, such as increased resources and clear routines. Key words: Stuttering, preschool children, collaboration, speech and language pathologist, interview.
