Abstract
This is a comparative study of eight different excavation sites in Western Sweden (Bohuslän/Halland). The purpose is to locate sites where boat building may have taken place in Bronze- Iron age. On these sites there are cooking pits that are interpreted in different ways, by studying archaeological reports and interpretations of the selected sites. I also looked at the possibilities of revise the interpretations of the cooking pits by comparing the context and geographical locations. A discussion of the interpretations and context is provided to determent which cooking pits were used for what purpose. This is a key stone to the problem around the concept ´cooking pits´ where a definition or categorization is needed and that is highlighted through the whole study. The analysis shows that some of the locations are possible locations for boat building, but the poor definition of cooking pits needs to be categorized for more specific interpretations.
