Abstract

The project explores the design of an urban park in the city block Plantaget, Gothenburg. The aim is to investigate how a public space can support social sustainability through its layout, pathways and zones. The design is based on a site analysis consisting of a movement analysis, where desire lines describe how people move through the area and where they tend to take shortcuts, a sun and shadow analysis to understand lighting conditions and a study of the site’s identity and character. The design process was guided by studies of the site and its conditions. These studies led to a division of the park into six different areas connected by pathways. Brick walls, changes in level and vegetation help define the different parts of the park and create a clear structure. The park offers a variation of zones, from open areas for social activities to smaller and more sheltered places for rest and relaxation. Materials such as brick, concrete, vegetation and metal are used throughout the site to create a unified design. The proposal aims to provide a welcoming place for meeting, resting and moving through the area while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.
