Adorned of what remains: critical fashion practice informed by psychopolitical approach
Abstract
Adorned of what remains is a project that aims to comprehend why the fashion industry prioritizes commerciality and profit, despite the knowledge of its detrimental supply chains, and how to navigate with the making of fashion design within these parameters. The primary goal is to generate the necessary knowledge, by a critical approach through the lens of psychopolitics, to understand the emotional governance that the industry holds on consumers, where they are able to keep pushing for over-production and over-consumption; all for the benefit of finding the right answers to work with fashion design in a
conscious manner. By dissecting this perspective, the project will explore the criticality and guide the project through the making of a collection of corsets, that serves as a purpose to push the boundaries of traditional norms and methods in fashion design; through symbolism of the current state of fashion, and by feminist theories. The used material of discarded fashion invites the project into the area of up-cycling and circularity. All whilst, metaphors and intersections will dwell into the desire to re-frame on how to work with the craft, and art form, that is fashion design.
