"Det är ju lika allvarligt som hjärtinfarkt” - En kvalitativ studie om biståndshandläggares arbete med äldre människor som lider av suicidtankar

Abstract
This qualitative study explores how caseworkers within elderly care services experience and respond to suicidal thoughts among older individuals. With an increasing proportion of the population aged 65 and older, there is a growing concern regarding the high suicide rates within this group, particularly among elderly men. Despite contact with home care services, many older adults continue to struggle with suicidal thoughts, which raises questions about the support provided by welfare systems. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with five experienced caseworkers in Sweden. A thematic analysis was used to examine their perceptions of how suicidal thoughts manifest during assessments and follow-up meetings, and how they respond to these expressions. The findings reveal that suicidal thoughts often is expressed subtly, through feelings of hopelessness or social withdrawal, rather than direct statements. Caseworkers experience challenges due to unclear guidelines and limited organizational support. The analysis draws on theories of continuity, stigma, loneliness, and gender to contextualize these experiences. It concludes that increased awareness, clearer routines, and improved training are essential for equipping caseworkers with the necessary tools to support suicidal older adults effectively.
