Att arbeta med dubbel utsatthet - En kvalitativ studie om hur stödinsatser anpassas och formas efter kvinnor med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning i prostitution

Abstract
This thesis explores how organizations working with prostitution support women with intellectual disability involved in prostitution. It also examines the opportunities and challenges in providing adequate support for these women. A qualitative method was employed, based on four semi-structured interviews. The theoretical framework includes intersectionality, ableism, and a thematic analysis. Findings show that organizations favor individual-based support, ranging from maintaining regular contact and frequent but shorter meetings, to promoting clients’ self-worth and confidence. Communication tools such as visual aid, pictogram and Bildsamt, along with the use of simplified language, were also highlighted as important. A major challenge is that clients with intellectual disability often struggle with identifying risks that may lead to prostitution. Another obstacle is that healthcare and other staff tend to avoid discussing sexual health with clients with intellectual disability and may lack awareness in evaluating the clients’ social circle. The cooperation between the organizations and other authorities, sometimes do not lead to change. However, efforts to collaborate and learn from each other are regularly made. Despite the difficulties that communicating with people with intellectual disability may present, it is at times easier due to the fact that the clients tend to be more open and honest with their feelings.
