Risk Management in Knowledge Sharing: A Cross - Cultural Approach for Multinational Corporations
Abstract
This study examines the role of risk management and cultural dimensions in cross-border knowledge sharing processes within multinational corporations (MNCs). Grounded by the Knowledge-Based View
and Hofstede’s cultural framework, the study investigates how MNCs navigate the complexities of cultural
diversity, institutional environments, and knowledge protection while promoting effective knowledge
sharing. Adopting a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 professionals
across various industries and regions, with the data analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings
highlight key strategies employed by MNCs, such as trust-building initiatives, culturally adaptive
communication practices, and governance mechanisms that balance formal controls with informal social
structures. Notably, the study identifies language barriers as a significant risk factor that can impede
knowledge sharing, even in culturally integrated environments. By synthesizing perspectives from cross cultural communication, risk management, and knowledge-sharing literature, the research provides an in depth understanding of how MNCs can improve organizational learning, foster innovation, and strengthen
coordination while effectively managing risks in international operations. This study contributes to
theoretical advancements by expanding the Knowledge-Based View to incorporate risk management and
provides practical recommendations for developing adaptive knowledge-sharing strategies in complex
international business contexts.
