A Symbolic Boardroom? Navigating Legitimacy Through Board Gender Diversity and Corporate Social Responsibility
Abstract
With an increased awareness regarding board gender diversity and corporate social responsibility
in society and the corporate world, this research intends to unveil the practical perceptions of these
topics. The research is based on a qualitative approach, where perceptions of board gender
diversity and corporate social responsibility by 24 Swedish board members from various
companies serve as the primary data. An additional interview is conducted with a Norwegian board
professional to provide insights into the Swedish case, primarily regarding a gender quota on
boards. To interpret the implications of the empirical findings, the research mainly applies
institutional theory, along with social role theory, to understand why board gender diversity is
presumably perceived to be of importance and its potential influence on corporate social
responsibility. The findings indicate that the topic of gender diversity is important. However, it
does not appear to be the most critical aspect during board recruitments and for the board dynamic
in practice. Furthermore, board members’ perception of board gender diversity’s influence on
corporate social responsibility indicates that other factors are of more importance, including legal
regulations, formal requirements, norms, and societal expectations.
