A Case Study in the Game As We Descend - Key Design Considerations for Implementing Controller Support in Fast-paced Deck-Building Games
Abstract
This study explores the critical design considerations for implementing controller
support in fast-paced deck-building games. Through extensive prototyping, playtesting,
interviews, and data analysis, several significant findings emerged. Players prioritize
both efficiency and overall experience, highlighting the need for a balance
between precision and comfort in controller design. Simplified control schemes, such
as an auto-hover memory system and wrap-around selection, can enhance gameplay
efficiency. Pre-existing player habits and preferences must be considered to facilitate
quicker adaptation to new control schemes. Consistent input methods, supporting
both D-pad and joystick inputs, prevent frustration and ensure a smoother
gameplay experience. Additionally, visual support, such as enhanced visual cues, is
crucial for controller users to navigate the game effectively. These insights provide
a comprehensive guide for developers aiming to create intuitive, efficient, and enjoyable
controller experiences in deck-building games. Further details and specific
recommendations are discussed in the full study.
