Not Alone at the Top - A Qualitative Study of the Role of Social Interaction within a Women-Only Leadership Development Program

Abstract
This thesis explores the significance of social interactions within Women-Only Leadership Development Programs (WOLDPs) and their role in expanding the network and fostering leadership development among female leaders. With a qualitative approach, the study examines the experiences of 17 former participants of the Ruter Dam program in Sweden through semi-structured interviews. A theoretical lens of bridging and bonding social capital with a relational dimension is adopted to investigate the role of social interactions. The research focuses on how social interactions contribute to creating social capital, both bonding and bridging, which enhances leadership capabilities. Findings indicate that social interactions within WOLDPs facilitate the formation of a robust relational network, providing emotional support, diverse perspectives, and practical knowledge sharing. These networks significantly boost participants' confidence, leadership skills, and professional advancement. The study highlights the dual role of bonding social capital in creating a supportive community and bridging social capital in connecting diverse groups, both crucial for effective leadership development. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics within WOLDPs and underscores the necessity of fostering robust, interactive networks to support women's leadership journeys.
