Relatives experiences of participation in the care of patients with pancreatic cancer
Abstract

the care during oncological treatment and in which way the nurse can support and involve
relatives.
Method: A qualitative method with an inductive approach has been used. Data-collection was
carried out with semistructured interviews and the sample consisted of eight relatives to
patients with pancreatic cancer. The collected material was analyzed using qualitative latent
content analysis.

Change in everyday life, Change of relationship, Relatives needs of own time, Relatives
support to the patient, Counceling, The importance of availability, The need of planning, The
importance of the meeting and Communication and information. The participants described
how both life and the relationship changed, they expressed need for time of their own and and
wishes for better accessibility to care and foresight in planning. Support from healthcare and
other relatives was described as important.
Conclusion: The result highlights the importance of training and increased competence
regarding person-centred care and person-centred approach which contributes to making the
relative´s individual needs visible to a greater extent so that support can be initiated and
provided at the right time. It also shows the importance of access to specialist nurses who,
with their competence, bring skills to meet more complex needs that increase the opportunity
for patients and relatives to prepare and cope with the challenges they face.
