Removal of pressure-sensitive tapes on paper: A study of the use of hydrogels
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine hydrogels practical efficiency in the removal of
pressure-sensitive tapes on paper. The organic agar gel and synthetically produced
Nanorestore Gel® PG5 Peggy Gel and Nanorestore Gel® High Water Retention are used in
an experimental process upon removing three common pressure-sensitive tapes (PTSs) on
paper. The aim is to provide a broader knowledge on how to practically use these specific
hydrogels using organic solvents. Upon the results of these experiments, a case study is
carried out on a paper object with a decomposed tape strip, deeply integrated into the paper.
The pressure-sensitive tape is carefully removed with Nanorestore Gel® High Water using
ethyl acetate as solvent upon the removal of the carrier. The results of the study show the
effectiveness of using synthetically produced hydrogels in the removal of pressure-sensitive
tapes on paper and discuss the benefits it generates as a favorable option (for conservators
who encounter similar problems in their profession).
The study found that working with hydrogels as conservation treatment in removing
pressure-sensitive tapes on paper is an effective and successful tool. Depending on the
quality of the paper and specific type of PST, using hydrogels prepared with organic solvent
removes the PST efficiently. The Nanorestore Gels® stood out in comparison with the agar
gel, with less time consuming application and advantageous absorption capacity.
