Att flytta en hundraåring. En studie om omlokaliseringen av kulturinstitutionen Göteborgs Konsthall
Abstract
In this essay, we investigate how culture can be used in political decisions and in urban
transformation in Gothenburg. To exemplify this, we use Göteborgs Konsthall and its
relocation to Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. By interviewing Konsthallens unit manager and
Higab's business developer for Slakthuset, as well as examining documents relating to the
relocation, we want to find out what the relocation process has looked like and what thoughts
there are regarding the move of Göteborgs Konsthall.
Our interest has also been in investigating the accessibility of the locations, the participants'
thoughts about target groups and how cultural capital can be visible in a location. Through
survey responses, we have seen indications that Götaplatsen can contribute to a perceived
smaller cultural capital, which contributes to reduced accessibility. The proposed location in
Slakthuset is perceived by both survey informants and the head of unit at Göteborgs Konsthall
as more welcoming and can thus increase the accessibility of Konsthallen. The mental and
physical barriers can be reduced due to the design of Slakthuset and the informality of the
area.
