Relative´s experiences of participation and its significance - An interview study with relatives of patients with cancer during palliative care and treatment
Abstract

Abstract
Background: A cancer diagnosis changes life both for the person affected and for people who are close to them. Relatives have an important role in the patient's well-being and it is of the utmost importance that they are involved and allowed to participate in palliative care and treatment. Relatives feel that the focus is primarily on the patient's illness and well-being and that they themselves are overlooked.
Aim: The purpose is to shed light on how relatives of patients with cancer experience participation during palliative care and treatment and in what way specialist nurses can support and involve relatives in the care.
Method: Qualitative method with inductive approach has been used. The sample consisted of nine relatives of patients diagnosed with cancer during palliative care and treatment. The data collection was carried out through individual semi-structured interviews. The collected material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Results: Four categories emerged; changed social relationships, need to be seen, care team support and need for information. The results show that relatives feel that social roles and relationships are changing. They feel that they gained a deeper relationship and a greater trust in each other. Relatives express a need to be seen and confirmed by healthcare professionals in order to feel involved. Relatives describe practical and psychosocial support to the patient in different ways. They also describe their own need for support from healthcare in how to manage their everyday life. The contact nurse has an important support function.
Conclusion: Relatives feel the need to be seen and confirmed by healthcare professionals and that they are allowed to participate and be involved in palliative care and treatment. Clear and individually tailored patient information about care and treatment is important for relatives to feel involved. The contact nurse's role in the nursing team needs to be clarified for the patient and relatives. The support is significant and several relatives wish for regular contact for follow-up.
