Påverkan av förväntad etnisk diskriminering - En enkätundersökning om studenters förväntade etniska diskriminering på svenska arbetsmarknaden
The impact of expected ethnic discrimination - survey of students' expected ethnic discrimination in the Swedish labour market
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate if ethnic discrimination in the Swedish labour market is expected by the students at University of Gothenburg and if expectations of discrimination impact students’ study motivation and study choice. To explore this, we conducted an attitude survey comprising 251 students of both Swedish and foreign origin. In this paper, the theoretical framework is taste-based and statistical discrimination theory.
The results for the research questions were that students with foreign origin expected to be to some extent negatively discriminated in the labour market, contrary to Swedish students who expected to be positively discriminated to some extent. Further, students who are foreign born state that the expected discrimination does affect study motivation and choice of education to some extent. Based on the findings and data, our observations are that students with foreign origin expect that their ethnic background will matter on the labor market, and we find an indication that these expectations may impact educational behaviors before entering the labor market.
