Abstract The use of the student ́s mother tongue in teaching a new language seems to be a rather controversial issue if we review the history. Over the years there have been different theories of how foreign language teaching should be and through a literary review, we will investigate and analyse existing theories that are related to this topic. We will analyse the reasons for using or not using the mother tongue while teaching a new language. We will examine what they have already written about the use of the mother tongue and the target language in general but also specifically in the Spanish as a foreign language classroom in Sweden. The studies we present in this paper are not only about the Spanish language in the Swedish community, but also about the relationship between the mother tongue and the target language in general. We understand that this might change the accuracy of the results a bit but we think it is still relevant in our literary review.sv
