Description: Background: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has one of the highest maternal and newborn mortality in the world. Although the availability of care has increased, the quality of care is still low. Since poor quality of care is now considered to be the main obstacle in reducing global maternal and newborn mortality, it is of the utmost importance that the quality of care is improved. DRC failed the Millennium Goals and is far from achieving the new global sustainability goals in Agenda 2030, therefore it is important to highlight the obstacles that exist in DRC's healthcare facilities in order to provide high quality care and opportunities for improvements. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe the opportunities and obstacles to provide high quality maternal and newborn healthcare in Ibanda Health Zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo, from the experiences of healthcare providers. Method: Seven focus group discussions were conducted with 35 healthcare providers working at labour and maternity units, representing seven healthcare facilities. The WHO’s theoretical framework for Quality of Care was used in a directed content analysis approach inspired by Elo and Kyngäs. Result: The result is presented under the eight categories of WHO´s theoretical framework. The result shows that there were many obstacles and few opportunities to provide high quality care at the healthcare facilities. The main opportunities that emerged were good collaboration between the professions and that the staff was motivated and passionate. The main obstacles were dangerous transport routes, incomplete information systems and a lack of personnel skills and the necessary equipment to care for the woman and the newborn child. Conclusion: All the included healthcare facilities are far away from reaching WHO’s quality statements for high quality care. These results can be used to improve care routines, increase staff competence and thereby increase the opportunities for good and safe healthcare at the healthcare facilities, which can reduce maternal and newborn mortality in the DRC. Key words: Quality of care, Maternal Health, Newborn Health, Maternal mortality, Newborn mortality, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ibanda Health Zone.
