Description: Background: The prevalence of overweight has increased among both children and adults. Today every fifth child in Sweden is overweight. Overweight leads to an increased risk for a number of non communicable diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In their daily work, school nurses meet overweight children and their parents. Since overweight can be a sensitive topic it is important how it is communicated. Results from previous research contains negative aspects of this communication but there is a lack of studies pointing towards positive factors, when it comes to communication. Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight school nurses experiences of communicating with parents of overweight children from preschool class up to 6th grade. Method: A qualitative study design was chosen and data were collected using semistructured interviewing. Eight school nurses in the Gothenburg area was interviewed. With focus on the manifest content the data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Result: Five subcategories and two categories unfolded during data analyzing. The first category, The dialogue between the school nurse and parents, shows which ways of communication are used, communication skills of the school nurse and obstacles in communication. The second category, To adjust interventions for the family, exemplifies the information collected and which questions parents are being asked, to be able to plan and implement interventions. Conclusion: Overweight is a sensitive topic to discuss with parents. Therefore, it is important that the school nurse is responsive and gentle. For interventions to be adjusted after the familys needs the dialogue between the school nurse and parents is crucial. Keywords: Communication, family centered care, overweight, parents, school nurse.
