art.description.projectThe project is an artist book about computers in relation to chance and marbling. It is a collection of found marbled papers that are assembled into a book and combined with a text and code that I have written to create marbling effects. The project research on our experience on digital material in relation to analog materials. The text is also part of a book on algorithms, where researchers and artists working with code writes about executions (https://www.gu.se/forskning/publikation/?publicationId=261438). The project has also been developed into a performance where I read the code and using a lava lamp to create chance for the creation of marbled papers. The performance has been shown in Berlin (Transmediale) and presented as Poster at The Nordic Conference in Digital Humanities. The project resulted in knowledge about how code can be used to create text and as an experimental form of writing. The project was also about how old crafts like marbling relates to modern technology and vice versa. It reflects on the history of chance in craft and its relation to computers both in the text but also as the book as an object. Each pattern is unique. I dream of marbling, colours spreading on the water surface, creating patterns on the surface of the paper. Chance. The unique book. Marbling as code. I am invited to write for a book, a book on algorithms, on researchers and artists working with code. I write a text on chance and marbling, and add a code that I have written to create marbling effects. The text becomes a book. Once, a long time ago, I bought an old set of drawers from a disused bookbindery. The drawers were filled with small scraps of left over marbled paper. They might have been intended for some later use, but instead they remained there. I use these scraps to create the contents for a new book, a book on chance, bound with programmed, chance marbled end papers. A text on the inability of the computer to create chance – on how they use cloud patterns as an element of real chance for digital casinos. The project has been developed into a performace (Transmediale, Berlin, reprecdigit Linköping), but also an artist-book (rojal förlag, no isbn) and presented as Poster at The Nordic Conference in Digital Humanities and a chapter in the book Executing Practices (Autonom Media, New York, http://www.data-browser.net/06/ )sv
