Description: Abstract: Background: Many patients at the emergency room are older persons. Research shows that the emergency care is not adapted for older person’s specific needs. Research also shows that older persons rarely experience participation in decision -making concerning their own care at the emergency room. There might be several reasons for this, for instance short stays at the emergency room and many healthcare professions involved. Other reasons might be that the patients have cognitive impairment, are in pain or in reduced general condition. There is a lack of knowledge about nurse´s perceptions about older person’s participation in decision -making in emergency care. Aim: To describe nurse’s perceptions of older people´s participation in decision-making regarding their own care at the emergency room. Methods: This study is of qualitative design with inductive approach. Six focus groups with nurses working at the emergency room have been interviewed at four hospitals in Sweden during the month of January 2017. Results: The result shows that nurses´ don´t believe that older persons get involved in their own care often, despite that the nurses´ are aware of how they can enable older person’s participation. The results are presented in three categories and ten subcategories. The categories are the older persons, the relationship with professionals and the care environment. Nurses believe that the patient’s properties affect how much they will participate in decisions regarding their own care. Nurses believe that participation in the care is when they cooperate with the patient. The cooperation is based on the conversations with the patients. There are circumstances while the nurses are working that they can´t affect that obstacles participation. The emergency care environment is said to be stressful and commanded by routines. Conclusion: Nurses are aware of how they can enable the older person’s participation in their own care at the emergency room. They experience a lot of obstacles in the care environment and they can therefore not prioritize the older person’s participation.
