Description: Background: Hearing protectors are meant to protect hearing against loud and disturbing noise. Users of hearing protectors should be able to understand speech, while the risk of hearing impairment due to the loud noise is eliminated or minimized. When the user`s needs to communicate are not fulfilled it may happen that users remove their hearing protection which can increase the risk of hearing impairment or other adverse health effects. Therefore, it is very important to adapt hearing protections based on user’s requirements and wishes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how the ear protectors affect speech recognition in noisy environments. Method: In the survey two types of earplugs was used: Foam earplugs: 3M E-A-R as well as two products from Bellman & Symfon`s product assortment: Bellman ER och ClearSound. In total 16 subjects (n=16) with normal hearing participated whose ages ranged between 19–35. Hearing In Noise Test (HINT) was used for investigating the speech perception where the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) was calculated for each hearing protection. Result: Significant differences in speech perception were found only for Bellman ER15 and ER25. A strong significant deterioration in speech perception was shown for foam earplug 3M E-A-R. Results of this study showed that hearing protections with flat/uniform attenuation can promote the speech recognition in noisy environments.
