The Visible: Contemporary Swedish Photography
Summary
The exhibition was a collaboration between Valand Academy and Artipelag initiated by Niclas Östlind. It included works by 21 contemporary photographers/artist from three different generations.
Description of project
The exhibition was initiated by curator Niclas Östlind as a part of his PhD-project Performing History: Photography in Sweden 1970–2014. The Visible presented an alternative interpretation of contemporary Swedish photography. It explicitly took a step away from the often-repeated historical narrative grounded in Christer Strömholm’s work, and the story how he has influenced the contemporary Swedish photography. The important shift in photography during the 90s, when several of the most important photographers were women, was reflected in the selection (20 women and 1 man), but also in the subjects addressed and the critical perspectives that have informed the works.
