The overall focus of this bachelor essay has been to raise the issue of urban development directed by the municipal company Älvstranden Utveckling AB in Gothenburg and their work with questions concerning cultural heritage. The main issues in this study revolve around how the company deals with development and cultural environment such as the built heritage. The survey’s starting point has been to try to specify the characteristics of the company's work when it comes to cultural heritage and preservation. In order to provide an understanding of the city's historic development there are a brief summary regarding the port of Gothenburg followed by the two geographically different areas of Eriksberg and Norra Masthugget. Furthermore, this paper describes the stakeholders in the development of the river shores of Gothenburg and explains the planned expansion of the areas in the seaport region. By reviewing what has happened to the cultural environment in the developmentprocess of Eriksberg I have been able to draw conclusions about the company's operations concerning cultural heritage. Additional information has been added during an interview with a representative from Älvstranden Utveckling AB. Legal frameworks for cultural heritage has been used to anchor the study in current laws and regulations and to examine how Eriksberg’s urban environment is planned. Norra Masthugget is highlighted as an example of the company's future development areas. In this essay there are a detailed discussion about this part of town and its physical components as resources in the making of future strategic plans. For example, there is a thriving market culture in the wooden building Kommersen; the second hand trade promotes encounters across all boundaries and shows the diversity that is possible in these kind of cityscapes.sv
