Description: Introduction: All women can be subjected to intimate personal violence by their partner, but the older woman's vulnerability to violence is not highlighted in research. Consequences of violence can be severe and it is essential from a public health perspective to explore the issue even for the older woman. Objective: The objective of the study was to generate a deeper understanding of the problems of older woman's vulnerability to violence by their spouse / partner. The research questions focused on what characterized their situation and how a gender perspective can illuminate the problem. Method: A structured search for scientific studies was carried out in the databases: Pubmed, Cinahl, PsykArticles and Scopus in the area of interest. A quality assessment of the articles was preformed and 12 qualitative studies were included in the study. A meta-synthesis analysis was conducted by identifying the main key items which then was interpreted to the two main syntheses. These syntheses were interpreted with a gender perspective, with focus on the gender order. Result: The two main syntheses was presented in two metaphors: Till death do us part, which describes women's main goal to keep the marriage intact despite violence in the relationship. The train has gone aim to describe woman's sense of lost time and that it is too late to do something after years of deprivation. The gender perspective showed that gender order has a strong impact on women's handling of violence in the marriage. Discussion: The results of the study showed that older woman’s tendency to preserve the marital unit are influenced by impacts of social norms and gender construction. From a public health perspective, this phenomenon ought to be highlighted when the current support for vulnerable women possibly fail to notice that aspect, which may create barriers for older woman’s help seeking.
