Before Jazz Had a Name
Block Chords and Improvisation in Harald Frykflöf‘s Symfoniskt stycke för orgel
Abstract
This independent artistic research project focuses on Symfoniskt stycke för orgel by Swedish composer Harald Fryklöf, composed in 1916 and originally titled Konsertstycke (In stile profano). Through performance, analysis, and creative transformation, I explore how Fryklöf’s harmonic language anticipates jazz idioms, especially in the use of block chords and extended harmonic colors. Drawing from the Adagio section, I experiment with alternative harmonizations using jazz-inspired techniques.
The project also documents my development as a performer and improviser, linking historical repertoire with contemporary approaches. Audio and video recordings of my performances are included to demonstrate both traditional and innovative
registrations. This study sheds new light on Fryklöf’s music while reflecting my personal voice as an organist and artist. The project is submitted as part of my Master’s studies at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.
