Vad vinner man på att mäta? – En kvalitativ undersökning av anställdas och chefers upplevelser med mätverktyg
Abstract
As organizations evolve with the modern and global state of the world, the need for control is larger than ever. This is often handled with the use of performance measurement systems, where the employees are supervised through quantitative data. However, many employees are experiencing higher levels of stress in the workplace, often with regard to how they are measured and the perceived feeling of surveillance. In this study we aim to examine these perceptions, from the point of view of the employees and the managers within the organization. Through interviewing both employees and managers we aim to acquire a more thorough understanding of the use of performance measurement systems by managers, and how they are received by the employees. This will be analyzed with the help of theoretical perspectives that discuss the different purposes of performance measurement, and what the effect and consequences within an organization can amount to. This will also be compared to previous studies that have examined the use of performance measurement systems in organizations. Our study shows that performance measurement is an effective tool for employers. To get the most out of this tool, communication and transparency is required. Employees can be motivated by performance measurement, but the results also show that performance measurement systems work for all parties when employees understand how it benefits themselves.
