The role of Technology in Facilitating Learning for Social Inclusivity of Migrants

Leveraging Technology to Enhance Learning and Promote Social Inclusion for Migrant Communities

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore how technology can facilitate learning to promote social inclusion for migrant communities. By focusing on the role of technology in active learning process, the study aims to identify strategies that enhance access to knowledge and skills, ultimately supporting the inclusion and participation of migrants in society. The research seeks to understand how technology can break down barriers and foster inclusivity through learning. Theory: The research is grounded in social inclusion and constructivism theory, which posit that knowledge is actively constructed by learners for their social inclusion. In the context of migrant inclusion, these theories highlight the importance of active learning and the learner’s role in creating their own understanding for their engagement in the host communities. Technology is viewed as a key tool that can facilitate this process by providing access to resources, supporting individual learning paths, and promoting the engagement necessary for social inclusion. Method: A qualitative approach was employed to gather data. A digital storytelling workshops and semi-structured interviews were conducted with migrant learners. This combination of methods allows for a comprehensive understanding of how technology impacts learning and inclusivity for migrants. Using digital storytelling workshops and interviews provides a rich and in-depth understanding of migrant learners' experiences. Digital storytelling encourages participants´ engagement and allows them to raise their voice, and semi-structured interview allows the participants to highlight their individual challenges and successes. This method captures personal narratives and perspectives and reveals how technology influences their learning and inclusion. Results: The findings indicate that technology plays a significant role in enhancing learning opportunities for migrants, particularly by providing flexible, accessible, and personalized learning experiences. Migrant learners reported increased confidence and engagement using technology to bridge the cultural gaps. Overall, the research shows that using technology for learning can significantly improve the social inclusion of migrants, empowering them to participate more fully in society.
