NAVIGATING OCCUPATIONAL STRESS IN SWEDISH UNIVERSITIES: An HR Perspective
Abstract
Purpose:
This study aims to investigate the employee-focused stress management interventions currently implemented in Swedish universities, as identified by HR professionals. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the various roles HR professionals play throughout the stress management process along with the perceived challenges inherent in addressing stress and burnout in academic settings.
Theory:
The existing classification of intervention measures depending on the level and focus of intervention was selected as the theoretical framework for this research. Some main concepts drawn from institutional theory, such as symbolic and functional isomorphism, along with the concept of the devolution of HR functions will be used to further analyze the findings.
Method:
The study has a qualitative design using 8 semi-structured interviews and 2 open-ended questionnaires with HR professionals working with stress management in Swedish universities
Result: The results examine current stress management measures, spanning primary, secondary, and tertiary approaches. These encompass proactive measures like health promotion seminars and leadership training and reactive interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and rehabilitation protocols. Moreover, the study illuminates the strategic, operational and supportive roles of HR professionals. Lastly, challenges inherent in stress management in academia are identified, ranging from job particularities to HR-related barriers. Despite these challenges, the study emphasizes the importance of proactive action aimed at organizational change. Overall, the main findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of stress management in Swedish universities and underscore the need for tailored interventions and collaborative efforts to promote employee well-being.
