En rörspis: och hur den är uppbyggd
The “rörspis”: and how it’s built
Abstract
This thesis researches the construction of the Swedish masonry heater called rörspis.
A rörspis has an inner smoke channel system that stores heat and it was developed in the
early 19th century alongside the Swedish kakelugn (tiled stove). Unlike the tiled stove,
the Rörspis was commonly found in simpler environments and is part of the cultural her itage of the rural population. While literature describes the appearance and function of
this stove, it does not detail its construction. The questions this thesis aims to answer are:
How this type of masonry stove is constructed? The question is addressed through a case
study, where an existing old stove is examined, measured, and used as a model to build a
new one. The result of the study is documentation of the stove’s construction, part by part,
through images, illustrations, and reflections.
