Den sydöstgötska dörromfattningen: en undersökning av Kisa tingshus dörromfattning
The crown moulding of the south of Östergötland: an examination of Kisa courthouse Crown moulding
Abstract
Kisa Courthouse in the south of Östergötland is a house built in the early 19th century with a typical neoclassical style. With clearly regular symmetrical wooden facade scheme with a central main entrance. The main entrance is a wooden double door with richly decorated portico. the crown moulding above the door consists of a band of dentils with a cornice moulding at the top. The portico is entirely made from wood. This specific wooden crown moulding can be seen on various buildings across the town of Kisa. A lot of sources on neoclassical architecture can be found in historical literature but not any specific written sources about the making of these crown mouldings. Two extensive rapports about cultural heritage and local significance have been the basis of this thesis. This thesis aims to gain knowledge about the neoclassical portico with its typical crown moulding and how the craft procedure might look like. The practical attempt is a way to ensure that the intangible cultural heritage of this historical craft is maintained. The result of the thesis led to the discovery that the crown moulding wasn’t an original detail from the early 19th century. A never-before-seen picture from the turn of the 19th - 20th century revealed that the crown moulding wasn’t manufactured and mounted until the late 1940´s. This concludes the importance of a craftsperson view and understanding about specific constructional details.
