CIRCULAR VALUE CREATION IN THE SWEDISH SEAFOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: STATUS, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES

Sammanfattning
This research investigates circular value creation practices in the Swedish seafood industry and identifies obstacles and opportunities for future value creation. Five seafood processing companies were studied using qualitative research methods, including cross-case and thematic analyses. The findings reveal distinct approaches to circular value creation, including zero-waste, external waste material integration, and waste disposal through animal feed, biogas production, and composting. The study highlights challenges and barriers faced by companies that lack specific mechanisms for circular value creation intended for human consumption, while those pioneering innovative approaches benefit from supportive measures provided by governmental bodies and research institutes. The research work contributes to the understanding of how circular value creation can contribute to sustainable development within the seafood industry and has the potential to inform policy decisions and guide businesses towards more sustainable practices. However, it is limited to seafood product manufacturing companies in Sweden and does not include fishing companies.
