Gör individer med yngre syskon av det motsatta könet mer könsstereotypiska studieval? – Studie om syskonkonstellationens könssammansättning och studieval

Do people with younger siblings of the opposite gender make more gender stereotypical study choices? - A study of the gender composition of a sibling constellation and choice of study.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the gender of siblings’ affect individuals’ choices. There are different studies that have shown that younger siblings adopt behaviors by observing older siblings. There are however few studies that analyze how older siblings' decision making is affected by younger siblings. For that reason this study aims to investigate if there exists a correlation regarding individuals’ gender stereotypical fields of study choices based on younger siblings of the opposite gender. To analyze this, a survey was conducted to collect information about the students and their sibling configuration which would be necessary for the purpose of this study. The thesis is based on specific program students at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers university of technology, attending the 20 most popular and gender stereotypical programs in the autumn of semester 2022. This study classifies a program as female dominated if more than 50 percent of the students are females, and a program as male dominated if more than 50 percent of the students are males. This study shows that students’ younger siblings of the opposite gender does not affect the choice of gender stereotypical field of study.
