Europa in Bewegung Zum Europa-Essay bei Hans Magnus Enzensberger.

Abstract

This thesis discusses the essay as a literary genre whose form is particularly apt to be compared to the structure of Europe. First, the theoretical discussion of cultural, literary and cartographic borders of Europe is dealt with. The theoretical discussions about the nature of the essay are then presented. The focus is on the nature of its formable hybrid genre, which is dependent on intertextuality. In the last part, an exemplary essay on Europe, „Ach Europa!“ by Hans Magnus Enzensberger is discussed. The purpose is to understand and clarify Enzensberger's vision and depiction of the continent. On the one hand, to recognize which literary conception of Europe the author agrees with. On the other hand, to capture Europeans' understanding of issues such as the periphery, intercultural phenomena and cross-border movements through the essay.
