Stolpunderreden - en förbisedd konstruktionsdel
Stilt structures on raised storage buildings
Abstract
This thesis attempts to build knowledge regarding variations in joinery and construction
processes of stilt structures on raised storage buildings in Sweden. The research also focuses
on potential reconstruction methods for future conservation measures. The stilt
constructions, known in Swedish as stolpunderred, are defined in this work as a four-sided
sill frame, stilts, and the cloven logs above the stilts. A field study of 8 buildings was
conducted detailing dimensions of stilt structures and the variations in their construction.
The data was collected in the form of field notes and photographs. The field work has been
interpreted into 3d models of potential construction solutions that have then been tested
through physical reconstructions. The results of the research are seven 3D models of
potential structural solutions of stilted construction as well as two physical reconstructions.
The two reconstructions comprise of sill logs with four differing variations of stilts in each
corner, as well as a reconstruction of a sill log structure with a single stilt variation. The
process of reconstruction was recorded through photography and a short description of the
procedure. The results provide a detailed record of eight stilt structures, possible variations
of joinery, along with a viable solution for potential reconstruction efforts in the future.
