dc.description.abstractThis essay will delve into the two films Real Women Have Curves (2002) and The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) and analyze the ways the young women as protagonists can liberate themselves from their mothers and find their path towards independence. The main purpose of this essay is to look into the aspects that allows and denies this liberation, by focusing on the mother-daughter relationship and exploring the nuances of it, through psychoanalytical and sociological perspectives, and a feminist analysis of the power relations. Negotiation of sexuality has been a key concept for the young woman’s path towards independence and will be analyzed by film theoretical examining texts. This to see in which ways it affects the young woman’s liberation from her mother, her relationship with herself and with the context of the society she exists within.en
