Patient's participation can be shown as the opportunity to be involved in their care process and being able to influence the decisions that are made by the professionals. Nurses meet patients within the psychiatric units who do not know what is planned and also lack commitment in their care and treatment. There is a reason why patients feel that they are able to influence their situation as a patient. That was the main motive why there is a need to study the phenomenon of participation experienced by patients with mental illness in order to adapt and improve psychiatric care for patients' needs. Aim of the study was to describe how patients with mental illness experience participation in their care and treatment. A qualitative content analysis method was chosen to describe the phenomenon by means of narrative interviews with six participants. The results are presented two categories. The first category is to not feel involved with six sub-categories: lack of information, communication difficulties, destructive care relationship and lack of commitment from health professionals, lack of continuity, workplace environment related problems. And the second category is to feel involved with three subcategories: enough information, good communication, and constructive care relationship. The results showed that patients' positive experiences of participation are dependent on effective care relationship, communication and nursing staff involvement in patients' care. Patients' knowledge and experiences about their health care situation is important for the sense of ownership. Results outcomes are reliable with the conception of person-centered care in which patients' experiences of participation is an important factor for good health. The quality of care is in admiration of a good care relationship, effective communication and increase in patients' knowledge about their care and treatment, which needs to be improved and further developed through the application of person-centered care in adult psychiatry.sv
I Resultatet presenteras två kategorier.
