Background: The complexity of lone refugee children’ s vulnerability in terms of political economy, social and mental health phenomena has a big range. Lone refugee children are vulnerable due to the interaction between traumatic events and the separation from loved ones. Lone refugee children are also at the mercy of the protection specified in human rights and the Convention on the rights to the child. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the state of the art of research on unaccompanied asylum seeking children’s health. Method: A literature based survey of the field was carried out, ending with 14 articles concerning lone refugee children’s health status. An analysis of the articles’ methodology, and the health effects was carried out, using the World Health Organization's definition of health in terms of mental, social, and physical well being. The journal articles’ suggestions on appropriate interventions and recommendations were also taken into account. Results: Lone refugee children in the research examined have experienced more traumatic events than accompanied refugee children. The dominant field of research on lone refugee children is within the area of mental health. Depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress syndrome are reported to be the most common vulnerabilities in mental health. There are also concerns regarding social wellbeing, under which researchers present behavioral disorders. Physical complaints are presented in a few instances. Health services are commonly seen to play a major role in improving the mental health of lone refugee children. Discussion/conclusion: A broad and comprehensive public health perspective is lacking in current research with lone refugee children. Qualitative research on unaccompanied asylum seeking children’s health would contribute with understanding of the different determinants of health. It is questionable to what extent the methodology and measurement tools are accountable to a child right perspective. In pre given questions and formulations of the health concerns to the child, the child’s own voice and concerns beside these are left unexamined.sv
Fysiska åkommor presenterades i få fall.
