Perenna växters färger. En studie om färgupplevelse baserad på litteratur och fotografisk dokumentation
The colours of perennial plants. A study of colour experience based on literature and photographic documentation
Abstract
The importance of colour and shape in plant composition interests me, but I have a feeling that plant colour, in particular, is often neglected in garden design. Shape and site properties are prioritised. In my opinion the colour of the plants should have centre stage when designing for public parks and gardens.
As a pre-study plants have been photographed in the month of June. The aim was to see which
plant colours caught the eye in early summer in different public parks and gardens.
This essay aims to find links between the colours of the plant material on the photographs, colour theory and research and gardening literature – in order to get at higher understanding if the combinations of plant colours on the photographs can be useful when designing borders and plantings in public spaces. And if documentation of the colours of plant material can be done satisfyingly through the use of photography.
Through studying literature, connecting the text to the photographs, I aim to answer these
questions: How does gardening literature convey harmony, when it comes to colour? What conclusions, about the colour of the plants on the photographs, can be valuable to use when designing borders for public gardens and parks?
