Description: Gothenburg, Sweden, is a city in which major urban development projects aim to make the city an accessible place for everybody, independent of individual abilities. When people want to participate in activities, but lack normal opportunities to do so, they are exposed to social exclusion. As people age their ability to travel to desirable destinations change. To travel is in many cases a basic necessity for being able to attain the things needed to lead a satisfying life. Elderly are a growing cohort which in the future will constitute a greater proportion of the population. Therefore, this study investigates, through a survey and geographic information systems (GIS), the spatial conditions for transport-related social exclusion of elderly in four districts in Gothenburg. This is done by analyzing elderlies’ accessibility to six important facilities and to public transit stops. By comparison on two scales - within study areas, and between study areas - the results are analyzed and problematized through the theoretical framework that constitutes the concept of ‘transport-related social exclusion’, with emphasis on its spatial dimension: ‘transport disadvantages’. The results exhibit distinct variations within and between study areas regarding elderlies’ accessibility to important facility types and public transit stops. The overall analysis also exhibits spatial differences in transport conditions, where there in the more peripheral and capital-poor districts exists great needs regarding accessibility to facilities and to public transit. In light of previous research on social exclusion, and the social components of the concept, the results of the study are raised for discussion and related to the districts’ socioeconomic circumstances. The study concludes that conditions for transport-related social exclusion vary between the study areas, with distinct differences between the study areas located near the city center and the peripheral ones. However, it is evident that transport-related social exclusion is a complex theme to study, as the phenomenon has numerous causes and effects, and there is still a lack of knowledge regarding its effects in the context of Gothenburg; knowledge that is needed to understand and combat this spatial inequality.
