Bladsticklingar. En undersökning av bladsticklingar som metod för vegetativ förökning av perenna trädgårdsväxter
Leaf cuttings. An examination of leaf cuttings as a method of vegetative propagation of perennials
Abstract
By comparing plant growth, testing different methods for vegetative propagation and then analysing the result, the gardener gains in-depth knowledge of plants and their propagation possibilities. This is something gardener has done for centuries and still does today. This bachelor’s degree project is an examination of the gardener's craftsmanship and of how morphology, i.e. the appearance of plants, can affect the gardener's work on vegetative propagation. The purpose of the thesis was to find out if the gardener, based on his craft skills and his knowledge, can determine whether it is possible to propagate with leaf cuttings based on the morphology of a plant. The purpose was also to find out what it is in the plant's morphology that makes it suitable to take leaf cuttings from.
This study is in many ways a study of the gardener's craftsmanship and how the craft and gardener's knowledge go hand in hand. The propagating attempt has given me a deeper understanding of the craft and made me reflect a lot about what I do as a prospective gardener and why I choose to do some practical things. Using my senses, such as sight and feeling, to make qualified guesses about which methods may be suitable for taking leaf cuttings of the selected perennials has given me another perspective on how knowledge and craftsmanship go hand in hand.
This is a big area that needs to be investigated further. This bachelor’s degree project only constitutes a small basis and more propagation attempts need to be made.
