| dc.description | Background: The intraoperative work environment is a place where blood exposure and sharps injuries occur. Regulations and safety devices exist to prevent these kind of injuries. A relatively new device utilized is the surgical safety knife. In order to be considered safe, the blade needs to be covered by the protection sleeve when not in use as well as handing over between intraoperative personnel.
Aim: The purpose of the study was to observe how the surgical safety knife are handled and used by the operating theatre personnel.
Methods: The study is a structured observational study using a quantitative method. An observation protocol was used for collecting data. The study consists of fifteen observations conducted in a hospital in the Västra Götalands region.
Findings: The results of the study showed correct use of the surgical safety knife. Usage of the traditional surgical knife was still in practice, and when used, it was usually used in a safe manner in the form of hands-free technique or neutral zone. However, in some occasions, the protection sleeve was not used correctly, and on one occasion neither the safety knife nor a safe technique was practised.
Conclusion: The intraoperative personnel are aware of the risks associated with the usage of the surgical knife. Despite shortcomings, the majority of the operating theatre personnel use both the surgical safety knife and the traditional surgical knife in a safe and correct manner. | sv |
| dc.description.abstract | Bakgrund: Den intraoperativa arbetsmiljön är riskfylld och stick-och skärskador förekommer. Riktlinjer och hjälpmedel finns för att förhindra att sådana skador sker. Ett sådant hjälpmedel är den kirurgiska säkerhetskniven. För att anses säker ska skyddshylsan alltid täcka knivbladet när den inte används samt vid överlämnandet mellan intraoperativ personal.
Syfte: Syftet med studien var att observera hur den kirurgiska säkerhetskniven hanteras och används av personal intraoperativt.
Metod: Studien är en strukturerad observationsstudie med kvantitativ metod. För datainsamling har ett observationsprotokoll använts. Studien utgörs av femton observationer och den genomfördes på ett sjukhus i Västra Götalandsregionen.
Resultat: Studiens resultat visade på att den kirurgiska säkerhetskniven används på ett säkert sätt. Traditionell kirurgisk kniv användes också, och säker teknik skedde vid överlämnande i form av hands-free eller neutral zon. De brister som uppmärksammades, var att säkerhetsknivens skyddshylsa inte alltid användes vid överlämnandet. Vid ett tillfälle användes varken säkerhetskniv eller säker teknik.
Slutsats: Den intraoperativa personalen är medveten om risken för skador orsakad av kirurgisk kniv. Trots brister använder ändå majoriteten av operationspersonalen både säkerhetskniv och traditionell kirurgisk kniv på ett säkert sätt. | sv |
